Our Matariki Disco and Celebrations

Matariki signals the Māori New Year. It is a time of renewal and celebration in New Zealand that begins with the rising of the Matariki star cluster. For the first time from next year we will be getting a public holiday for Matariki.

For some people the Matariki star cluster is made up of seven stars, while for others it's nine. So which is it? Both. Matariki A star cluster which appears in the night sky during mid-winter.

Matariki activities!During Matariki we made a posters and wall decorations that represented the Matariki stars. We learnt flex weaving and practiced our performances for the Matariki evening. We were also part of lots of other Matariki activities through out the week. We made poi’s and kites with preschool Rua. Rua also showed us how to make Matariki biscuits.  What an awesome week with lots of learning taking place.

  • Learning happening:

Learning new songs and using our memory to remember these songs.
Leaning to weave (this required eye and hand coordination)
Learning a new recipe for the cooking
Learning to use the hot glue gun and how to keep safe

We also had a Matariki Disco, it was an evening of celebrating culture and whanau. On behalf of BestStart Stoddard team we want to thank each one of you for making our Matariki Disco night a very successful event!

We are very proud of our children for practising and performing in front of everyone. We hope that you all enjoyed the night, performances, and Kai (food).
