To extend on some recent learning in the Preschool room we invited a couple of our volunteer firefighters along from our local community. We were very lucky to have Jason and Logan, who just so happen to be parents of two of our preschool tamariki (children), visit us with the local volunteer firetruck. Jason and Logan taught us all about what they do as firefighters and we were able to see all the different equipment they use. The tamariki learnt that there is so much equipment needed when you are fighting fires. They were able to explore inside the cab of the firetruck and some also got to experience putting the sirens on. They were really loud since we were so close to the firetruck, some of us had to put our hands over our ears!
As if the the tamariki thought that their morning couldn't get any better, they even had the opportunity to try out an important piece of equipment-the hose! Many of the tamariki were courageous enough to have a turn at turning the hose on and practice their fire extinguishing skills.
What a fascinating experience where the tamariki were able to make connections between people, places and things in their world. The tamariki also had the opportunity to refine their working theories that had been developed about firefighters in the classroom as they got up close and personal with real life firefighters and a firetruck. A big thank you to Jason and Logan for making this experience possible and thank you to Harry for showing us the ropes. We love celebrating our relationships with our whanau and community.
