Our visit to the reitriement village for Cook Island Langauge week

This Cook Island Language Week, our children had a truly memorable experience visiting the local retirement village.

It was a beautiful day filled with smiles, laughter, and cultural connection as the children made and shared traditional Cook Island Ei Katu - the vibrant, fragrant headbands that hold deep cultural significance.

The children eagerly crafted these Ei Katu with bright flowers and leaves, carefully weaving each one with love and respect. Once finished, they proudly presented the headbands to the residents, lighting up the room with joy and a sense of community.

The visit didn’t stop there! Our young visitors sang lively Cook Island songs and performed traditional dances, filling the space with music and happiness. The residents joined in with claps and smiles, sharing stories and laughter as they connected with the children. It was heartwarming to see such genuine interaction across generations - a beautiful reminder of the power of culture and community.

These visits provide invaluable opportunities for our children to step outside the classroom and engage with our wider community. Meeting new people, sharing traditions, and learning through real-life experiences enrich their understanding and appreciation of their heritage.

We are grateful to the retirement village for welcoming us so warmly and look forward to many more visits that bring our community together and celebrate the beautiful Cook Island culture.
