Our preproom tamariki (children) have been practising following instructions as part of their Be School Ready programme. In this exercise they has to stand in two lines and pass the ball over their heads to the person behind them.

At first it was a bit tricky as they kept looking behind and across to what the others were doing. After some practice it got easier for them. Then the kaiako (teachers) changed the instruction to pass the ball under their legs.

Kaiako demonstrate to tamariki how to do the actions, then they add the language to match the intention. This is a powerful way to connect with our tamariki and foster their learning and development in oral language.
