Our art exhibition at BestStart Leeds Street has become an annual event every November and one that the Kaiako, Tamariki and Whānau all look forward to. The planning stage of our exhibition begins right back at the start of September. The Kaiako have discussions with the Tamariki about what areas of art they would like to focus on and what resources we need to achieve these artistic creations. T

his year we found we had a wider age range of Tamariki to cater for so we wanted to include all different types of art areas that suited everyone’s artistic abilities. Our areas of art that we focused on for 2023 were “Wellington on a Palette; art based around our Wellington icons that the four-year-olds often visit on their weekly art excursions” The icons of choice were The Beehive and The Bucket Fountain, both favourites for the Tamariki to draw because of there interesting shapes, curves and colours. We created with clay and married this with our weekly bush trips to Otari Wilton Bush, where the Tamariki foraged for natural resources to bring back to the centre and create imprints with the nature in to their clay creations.

We did some paint rolling which encouraged the Tamariki to experiment with the mixing of colours to create their master pieces. The Tamariki made their choice about which colours they wanted included in their art. We placed a few blobs of paint on the paper, then covered it with cling film. Then watched as the magic of the colours began to blend together as the Tamariki rolled the rolling pin backwards and forwards over the paint. Lastly, we included photography where the Tamariki were able to direct and model for photoshoots that focused around portrait shots.

These provided a lot of fun and laughter as the Tamariki tried to take photos of one another whilst navigating sharing and turn taking with the camera. What a wonderful event this is, you can truly see the pride and empowerment that Tamariki get in showing their Whānau their very own artistic pieces that have been so loving framed and displayed at the Art Exhibition. Thank you Kaiako and Tamariki for all your hard mahi!
