At Beststart Silverdale we have taken on a new focus to reduce waste to landfill from our Centre. Our two main objectives are to repurpose our food waste and to increase our recycling.

Therefore, to take active participation in reducing food waste, and reuse of food while focusing on sustainability goals with the partnership of our Tamariki, teachers, whanau, and community, we are participating in the Eco ECE Programme which is run by our local board. Food Waste is a massive problem in New Zealand.

Every year Kiwis send 157,398 tons of food to landfills, all of which could have been eaten. With the help of Sam from the Eco ECE Programme, we have recently installed a bokashi bin which means our food waste is taken away to be turned into compost instead of ending up in the landfill. We have also implemented the use of recycling bins throughout our classrooms so our tamariki can actively participate in our goal to increase our recycling.

By teaching children about the importance of reducing food waste through responsible consumption, reuse, and recycling, they can become more conscious of their own actions and develop sustainable habits to benefit the planet and future generations.
