At Napier Central, relationships sit at the heart of everything we do.

We believe that strong, respectful connections are the foundation for learning, wellbeing, and a true sense of belonging for our tamariki and pepi.

We explore what care truly means to us and how it plays a vital role in fostering secure attachment. A key learning for our team is the importance of practicing care with respect and clear intention. This means being prepared with our head, heart, and hands - understanding the theory, bringing warmth and empathy, and responding thoughtfully through our actions.

Caregiving is not something we do to pepi, but something we do with them, recognising it as a reciprocal and collaborative process. By slowing down and being fully present in caregiving moments, we create space for authentic connections to grow. These moments are grounded in aroha, compassion, and a strong sense of partnership, allowing pepi to feel seen, safe, and valued.

Through this lens, everyday routines such as nappy changing, feeding, and settling become meaningful opportunities to build trust and deepen relationships. For our very young pepi (Under 1 year) and new enrolment pepi in Ruma Paua, we prioritise having one kaiako take on the role of primary caregiver.

This intentional practice supports consistency and security, helping pepi to form strong attachments with a familiar and responsive adult. Over time, these relationships provide a secure base from which pepi can explore, learn, and thrive.

Our philosophy continues to guide our practice, reminding us that nurturing relationships is not an add-on - it is at the very heart of quality care.
