This month at BestStart Newton, our centre was full of excitement, curiosity and “wow” moments as tamariki became Nature Scientists in action. In true Newton style, learning was playful, hands-on and full of discovery, where children’s wonder leads the way.

Guided by Kōwhiti Whakapae, these science experiences supported children to explore, think deeply, communicate confidently and build strong learning pathways for the future.

Our first adventure was the famous Volcano Eruption Experiment. Tamariki watched closely as the volcano bubbled, fizzed and erupted with colour. Children made predictions, shared ideas and used rich new vocabulary such as fizz, erupt, bubble and reaction. This links directly to our Pētatā goal of oral language, as children strengthened their confidence to explain, describe and wonder aloud.

Next, we explored the Water and Oil Investigation, where children discovered that oil floats and does not mix with water. Tamariki observed carefully, asked thoughtful questions and explored early scientific concepts, supporting our Pētatā goal of maths and science learning through real experimentation and inquiry.

To extend our thinking, children took part in the Toothpick Tower Challenge, testing balance, height and structure. Tamariki showed perseverance, creativity and teamwork, building early engineering and problem-solving skills while learning through collaboration and exploration.
