BestStart Wattle Downs' Little Tui Room did a week-long celebration to honour the Filipino community and to show that we value and respect every culture that our centre caters to. Simple words such as “Kumusta?’’ and “Salamat”, translated as "How are you?" and "Thank You" have been relayed to the team to use in their interaction with the children and the team. This is our way of celebrating uniqueness and diversity as a part of core values over at BestStart Wattle Downs. Monday started with greeting words such as “Magandang umaga” (good morning) and “Magandang Hapon” (Good afternoon).

Tuesday was baking day; we made an ube (purple yam) chiffon cake and the children participated in measuring and mixing the ingredients. Wednesday was arts and crafts day where the children painted the Philippine flag. Thursday was singing and dancing the famous “paa, tuhod, balikat, ulo” (head, shoulders, knees and toes) and the children had fun doing this. Although they may not understand it, they get the idea that it is head, shoulders, knees and toes they were dancing and singing to.

On Friday we had face painting, where the Philippine flag colours were used, in conjunction with this celebration, we also commemorated the Indian Independence Day where we used the Indian flag colours to paint the other side of the cheeks of children and teachers. A week-long celebration, but a lifetime's worth of experience!

As a team, we are proud that such diversity is present in our centre allowing us to know more about one's culture and identity. Salamat!
