Samoan Language Week was a vibrant celebration at BestStart Johnstones Road Kindy, our early learning and childcare centre in Ōtara. Tamariki explored the beauty of Samoan culture through music, art, kai, and meaningful moments with whānau, reflecting our commitment to celebrating the diverse cultures of our community.
At BestStart Johnstones Road Kindy, we proudly celebrated Samoan Language Week to honour the language, values, and vibrant culture of our Samoan community.
The week was filled with joyful early learning experiences as tamariki engaged in activities that helped them learn about and appreciate the beauty of Samoan language and culture. Children wore traditional attire, sang Samoan songs, and learned simple greetings like “Talofa” and “Fa’afetai.”
They listened to stories and legends from Samoa and explored traditional crafts such as making leis and Siapo (tapa) patterns. The centre was beautifully decorated with Samoan flags, flowers, and symbols reflecting Samoan identity.
Whānau and members of our centre community were actively involved, sharing delicious Samoan food like panikeke and chicken soup with coconut cream, and performing traditional dances (siva) that brought everyone together.
Teachers incorporated Samoan language into daily routines and planned meaningful activities that embraced the values of alofa (love), fa’aaloalo (respect), and aiga (family).
At BestStart Johnstones Road Kindy, we believe that celebrating language, culture, and identity enriches every child's early learning journey. Events like Samoan Language Week help strengthen children's sense of belonging while building meaningful connections with families and our wider community.
We are committed to creating a learning environment where every child feels seen, valued, and connected.
Fa’afetai tele lava – thank you very much!
