This month, our kaiako (teachers) had planned fun activities for tamariki (children) in our Pukeko room (under 2 year olds). Our focus this month is sensory play. Sensory play includes any activity that stimulates our young children’s senses: touch, smell, taste, movement, balance, sight and hearing. Sensory activities encourage exploration and naturally encourages children to investigate and explore.

The popular sensory activities for the month were; frozen sea creatures and seaweed, creepy crawlies in the blue gloop, frozen pinecones and dry leaves, frozen coloured ice, shredded papers in the trough and herbs mixed into our playdough.

Sensory play is a wonderful way for our under 2’s to be active explorers. It awakens curiosity and knowledge for our children. We are excited to explore more sensory play in the months to come.
