In our Pikopiko Room at BestStart Tawa South sensory exploration is an important development experience we have available every day.

We absolutely love messy play – both teachers and children alike!  A recent favourite is shredded paper. Our children love throwing it up in the air, catching it when a teacher drops it from the air or putting it on each other’s heads like crowns.  When shredded paper is out, the room is filled with laughs and giggles.

Playing with shredded paper does not require any predetermined skills or abilities and this makes children feel more confident while playing.  It also promotes social play among the children, may it be parallel or even associative play.

Aside from all this, the children also get to improve on their gross motor and even fine motor skills.  It gives them the opportunity to be creative and serves as an avenue to express themselves.  It allows them to be carefree and make a mess. Nothing beats the sound of children having fun in our Pikopiko room.
