At BestStart Bremner Road, our school readiness programme is thoughtfully designed to support children in building the essential skills they need for a smooth and confident transition to school.
We focus on developing literacy, numeracy, communication, and social skills in a fun, engaging, and supportive environment.
Our teachers work closely with children to strengthen their fine motor skills, particularly pencil grip, which is an important foundation for writing. Through a range of hands-on activities, children practise tracing, drawing, and early writing skills. They are encouraged to recognise letters and sounds, and gradually learn to write their names using both uppercase and lowercase letters, fostering a sense of independence and achievement.
In numeracy, children explore numbers up to 10 through interactive games, songs, and daily routines. They learn to count forwards and backwards, recognise numbers, and begin to understand basic mathematical concepts such as sorting, patterns, and quantities. These experiences help build confidence and a positive attitude towards learning mathematics.
Communication and confidence are central to our programme. Our weekly “Show and Tell” sessions, held every Tuesday, provide children with opportunities to speak in front of their peers, share their ideas, and listen to others. This helps to develop language skills, social confidence, and respect for different perspectives.
We also place a strong emphasis on social skills such as taking turns, following instructions, working collaboratively, and building friendships. These skills are essential for helping children adapt to the structure and expectations of a school environment.
To further support the transition process, we organise school visits three times each month. These visits give children the opportunity to experience a real classroom setting, become familiar with routines, and feel comfortable in their future learning environment. This helps reduce anxiety and builds excitement about starting school.
