At BestStart Great North Road, our Set for School programme nurtures tamariki through play, creativity, literacy, and numeracy. With strong whānau partnerships and school visits, we help children grow into confident, competent learners ready for school.
Here at BestStart Great North Road we strive to provide a holistic Set for School programme. Teachers focus on a variety of areas to ensure children are ready for their next learning journey. This includes early literacy and numeracy skills, curiosity and creativity through art, science and technology, physical wellbeing, social and emotional skills, learner confidence, and support for families to seek information.
Our preschool children have fun exploring and learning through play, whether it’s experimenting with colour, shape, and size through arts and crafts, or testing their physical abilities such as balance and coordination through obstacle courses.
We hold a yearly Transition to School parent evening where New Entrant teachers share expectations for school and how parents can support their children. The teaching team set up a variety of learning experiences for parents to take part in and explain how these activities help prepare children for school.
A favourite Set for School experience for our tamariki is our regular trips to our local school. Teachers take small groups of children to Kelston Primary each term so they can experience a New Entrant class, join mat time, and take part in the morning literacy programme.
By working closely with parents we send our tamariki off to school as competent and confident learners, ready to take the next step in their learning journey.
