In our Kōwhai room for tamariki aged 4–5 years, we support children as they prepare for school by celebrating their strengths and tailoring learning experiences to their needs. Our environment is intentionally designed to spark curiosity, encourage independence, and build strong connections.

Through BestStart’s Set for School programme, we support each child to transition confidently into primary school. We work closely with whānau to promote early literacy, numeracy, and self-help skills, helping children take greater responsibility for themselves.

A key focus is active participation in mat time, where tamariki learn to sit, listen, and engage—important foundations for starting school. During these sessions, children explore phonics, number knowledge, pūrākau (Māori stories), waiata (songs), and yoga.

Our popular lunchbox day, held fortnightly, further supports independence, healthy eating, and everyday practical skills. Each day, tamariki enjoy rich, hands-on learning across indoor and outdoor spaces. Guided by BestStart’s 16 areas of play, children are encouraged to investigate, create, and experiment. We regularly introduce new challenges to inspire them to test their abilities and reach their potential.

Our programme is deeply rooted in Māori values, which guide our daily practice. We show manaakitanga by caring for others and celebrating identity. Kotahitanga is reflected through shared learning and collaboration. Through kaitiakitanga, children learn to care for their environment and belongings. Rangatiratanga supports them to make choices and develop independence.

To further support school readiness, we visit Kelston Primary each term and the New Lynn War Memorial Library regularly. We also host a biannual Transition to School evening for whānau.

By working in partnership with whānau, we proudly support every child to become a confident and capable learner. Join us in helping your child take the next exciting step in their learning journey.
