At BestStart Maui in the preschool ruma we held our first set for school evening for our whanau.
This was a chance to share our daily rituals and learning experiences that ensure we are supporting and encouraging tamariki mā to become capable and lifelong learners ready for kura (school).
This was a great opportunity for whanau to think and reflect on how their child is going in terms of developing those foundation skills to be able to extend on those skills once they set off for kura. We discussed key competences from NZ curriculum that align with Te Whariki strands and how we incorporate those guidelines into our documentation and intentional teaching.
We showed many photos of their children showing these skills and learning through a variety of learning experiences provided by kaiako. We had a lovely korero where we were able to discuss afterwards individually with parents about where their child is at and what school they will go to.
Parents were able to understand the importance of self-management and supporting their children to be more independent to ensure they can look after themselves once they go to kura. They gained learning around new entrant classrooms and what to expect, and we can work together to set our tamariki ma for success at kura.
