We have been very busy and sensible group of Set For School Children keeping us engaged with their writing and cooking of our afternoon tea here. We are very lucky here to have our Rito Award for Healthy Heart so baking our afternoon tea is important to us. We like to bake things that are good for our bodies and keep us fueled for writing throughout the day.

We are learning so much through our baking. Below are just some of the things we are learning:
Literacy: reading recipes together and learning cooking vocabulary.

Having a recipe with pictures of the steps is helpful when cooking with young children.
Maths: measuring, counting, recognition of numbers, comparison (less/more), fractions, shapes, and colors.
Science: the combining of different ingredients and temperatures to create reactions.
Sensory: mixing, rubbing, kneading, and touching the food.
Creativity: making shapes and perhaps the addition of a different ingredient.
Curiosity: asking questions and experiencing transformations of food.
Teamwork: working together to create food.
Patience: following the recipe and turn-taking.
Life skills: an understanding of food safety, where food comes from, nutrition, and how to create food.

Cleaning up also is an important life skill.
Self-help: food preparation to develop skills to cook a meal for themselves. The tamariki love our baking sessions as well as incorporating their learning into their mahi!
