At BestStart Katikati, we understand that moving from the under twos to the over twos space is a big and exciting milestone for tamariki - and for their whānau too!

We want this step to feel supportive, nurturing, and positive, so we strengthened our transition process to ensure everyone feels confident and prepared.

One of the key ways we do this is by having a dedicated transition kaiako, who spends time in both the under twos and over twos spaces, building strong and trusting relationships with tamariki and their whānau.

Our transition kaiako works closely alongside the tamariki, introducing them to new skills and resources like scissors, felts and glue sticks that they will use in the over twos’ environment, providing opportunities for learning and creativity. When our tamariki are close to turning two, we take them on regular visits to the over twos space to allow them to become familiar with the new environment, learn the daily routines, and begin forming friendships with both the kaiako and the tamariki they will soon join.

Communication is at the heart of this process. The transition teacher keeps whānau updated with regular feedback about how their child is engaging during visits and settling into the new environment. We also ensure whānau feel welcomed into the over twos space, so they know where things are and feel part of the journey.

To support whānau further, our under twos teachers provide a transition letter when a move is coming up, along with a special goodie bag. Inside is a personalised book filled with photos and simple text showing the over twos room, the routines, and ways to help children feel settled. Whānau can look through this with their child as often as they like, helping them visualise and talk about what is ahead.

There are also a few thoughtful goodies for parents and caregivers - because we know this can be an emotional step for everyone. At BestStart Katikati, our goal is to make transitions a smooth, positive, and meaningful experience, so tamariki step into their new environment feeling excited, confident, and ready for the next stage of their learning journey.
