BestStart Katikati is where fun and learning meet! We're an early learning centre where tamariki develop through play. We pride ourselves on embracing the diverse needs of our community and enjoy supporting and encouraging our young ones in their understanding of these cultures and wider social connections.

At BestStart Katikati is our place in the community!

Katikati is a small, tight-knit community. We are known for being the "mural town" and "avocado capital" of New Zealand. Our town thrives on community events and horticulture. There are lots of things to love about Katikati, including the beautiful walks along the Uretara River, community gardens, local markets, community art displays and our beautiful centre.

We value quality relationships - some of our team have been in the centre for over 10 years and have long-standing connections with families in the community. We celebrate these connections and use them as a stepping stone to creating an atmosphere of belonging for children and families.

Some of our unique learning experiences include:

  • Gardening: Our Kaiako are passionate about growing beautiful flowers and vegetables in our custom-built raised gardens. We invite all children to be a part of this valuable learning experience. Art and creation is also
  • Art Experiences: Each day we have art experiences ready and available for tamariki. Our Centre has dedicated spaces to engage in creative arts. We display their artwork in our classrooms and ensure parents have the opportunity to take their child's artwork home.
  • Dress Up Days: We have regular dress-up days to celebrate special days, birthdays, and holidays throughout the year. We encourage positivity and celebrating every child, their culture and achievements.

Our Team

Our team is made up of five qualified teachers, one teacher in training and a centre administrator. Some of our teachers have been a part of the Centre for over 10 years. Our team are passionate about the arts, gardening, supporting children's overall wellbeing and being a part of the community.

What We Offer

  • 20 hours free for 3-5 year olds and WINZ subsidies available* if required
  • Experienced tight-knit team of passionate teachers
  • Gold Healthy Heart Award - knowing nutrition and health is important to us
  • Fresh, healthy, nutritious meals and snacks provided throughout the day

Our Spaces

Our Centre is a home away from home. We build quality relationships with children, parents and whanau, so they feel safe within our space. We have a learning-focused culture and set up play-based learning experiences, where children can learn and explore their interests. Throughout our Centre, we ensure that children and parents feel a sense of "Whanaungatanga" because they are a part of our family and we respect and care for their wellbeing.

kind words from our parents

Parent

BestStart Katikati has become an extended family to us. The love and care they show my son has made the transition to daycare so much easier. I love the smaller size enrollment in the under 2 side. Fun activities are always planned, with learning in play. Couldn't ask for a better center to entrust the care and learning of our baby.

Parent

We have been apart of the BestStart Katikati family for the past 3+ years. We all absolutely love the care and education provided by the amazing teachers. They are all so welcoming and you can tell they genuinely love their job and the children. We couldn't thank them enough for what they do for our children.

Parent

The staff at ourBestStart Katikati are friendly, happy, the kids love them. They also encourage lots of hands on play and learning. We are very religious and they have been very accommodating with certain things we don't want our child to take part in. If they have personal opinions on this they don't force them on us or ignore us. Also they work in with the primary school next door to help the kids transition and also have hosted an evening with the deputy principal, coming and telling parents what school is like and how they can get their kids ready for it. They also have fun daily activities planned during school holidays, so that the kids are happy to attend rather than wishing they were at home with their school aged siblings. Overall they have been wonderful people to entrust our children with.

Parent

Our centre treats all of us as if we were part of an extended family. They encourage our child to strive to be the best person he can be in an inclusive environment. They are open, caring and easily approachable.
