Once in a lifetime opportunity to have snow on the ground at preschool in October!

As the snow started to melt from the sunshades over our playground, it created waterfalls. Alongside the icy snow being on the boxes and rocks it unfortunately made it too slippery and unsafe to go outside and explore the snow. We didn't want to miss the opportunity so we brought the snow inside to the trough!

Tamariki were super excited and waited somewhat patiently for the snow to arrive inside before straight away getting their hands into it, exploring the texture, temperature and the reaction that occurred to both the snow and their hands as they touched it. The more they played with the snow the more their hands turn red and cold and the snow started to melt from the warmth of their skin, this was a great opportunity to discuss scientific concepts and making sense of the world around them. As tamariki played together they shared their previous experiences with snow as well as who had it at their homes in the morning and on their cars too, making connections between home and centre as well as past experiences.
