Social Interactions with peers
In our Harakeke room here at BestStart Papatoetoe, our infants and toddlers have been showing a strong interest in songs and rhymes as we are supporting their parents aspirations of enhancing verbal language development and social interactions with their peers. We have been exploring different rhymes to suport this as ‘Old Mac Donald has a Farm’ is one of their favourites so far. We have been singing the song, reading the book and setting up the environment with a farm too.
Our infants and toddlers are freely exploring this space as we used animals, puzzles, and books to support this as well as daily conversations. We even created our own farm animals using natural resources during art and craft time. These were displayed by our farm and supported our toddlers to learn the names of the farm animals and sounds alongside their peers.
As verbal communication is so important for a child’s learning and development, learning this way has supported our Tamariki and they are always saying the names and sounds of the animals as well as interacting with their peers and teachers. This is also supporting their confidence and knowledge development.
