Recently we embarked on spontaneous walk into the community with some of the BestStart Hokowhitu children. With a brand new park opening just around the corner we thought this could be a fabulous place for exploration. With two teachers, and four tamariki we set off on our adventure. On our way to the park we were extending on our road safety knowledge as we crossed some roads. Once getting to the park tamariki were challenged physically as they explored the climbing frames, slides and swings. We were lucky enough to see our sister centre Best Start Marne St had also taken a group of 4 year olds on a walk to the park. This provided some beautiful reciprocal play and support opportunities between the older and younger tamariki.

Our tamariki are developing strong relationships within the community. While we explore the park tamariki are gaining confidence in their physical abilities, developing coordination, balance and control of their bodies. They are also extending their social skills as they take turns exploring this exciting new environment. We look forward to more spontaneous walks into our community.
