Stitching Stronger Whānau Connections

At Motutaiko Street, we believe that learning is most powerful when it is shared.

Not just between kaiako and tamariki, but with whānau too.

Recently, we had the privilege of welcoming one of our wonderful parents into our centre to teach our children how to sew. This experience was more than learning a new skill & it was a beautiful example of how whānau contribute meaningfully to our learning environment.

Using a sewing machine, our tamariki sat alongside their parent, learning how to pick fabric pieces and then stitch simple patterns and create small fabric pieces. The room was filled with concentration, curiosity, and pride as children discovered the joy of making something with their own hands.

What made this moment truly special was the way the parent didn’t just teach, she sewed alongside the children, sharing stories, encouragement, and laughter.

This experience reflects our commitment to building strong partnerships with whānau. When parents and caregivers share their skills, passions, and time with us, they enrich our curriculum in ways that are deeply personal and culturally responsive.

It also strengthens the sense of belonging for tamariki, who see their whānau valued and involved in their learning journey. Sewing together became a metaphor for the threads that connect us, each stitch a reminder of the collaborative spirit that underpins our centre.

We are grateful for the contributions of our whānau and look forward to many more shared experiences that weave learning, culture, and community together.
