Tamariki Tales: Growing Literacy Through Storytelling

In our over 2 room, we are passionate about creating a meaningful environment that reflects the diverse ways tamariki learn, communicate, and connect with the world around them.

One of the key ways we do this is through storytelling - not just as a way to share stories, but as a foundation for building oral language, imagination, empathy, and a strong sense of identity.

We believe that storytelling goes beyond books. It lives in our voices, our art, our play, and our cultural narratives.

Each day, we provide opportunities for tamariki to engage with stories in a variety of ways, such as reading their favourite books, acting out tales with puppets and props, to creating their own stories through role play, drawing, and conversation.

Throughout our space, we use intentional provocations to inspire curiosity, conversation, and creativity. A central part of our literacy journey involves embracing Aotearoa’s bi-cultural foundation by incorporating pūrākau (traditional Māori stories) and waiata (songs).

Our approach is grounded in Te Whāriki, which reminds us that children are capable and competent learners. As kaiako, we listen, document, extend, and celebrate their voices. Literacy isn’t just a subject-it’s a living, breathing part of our everyday life.

"Together, we weave a learning environment where every story is honoured, every voice is heard, and every child thrives."
