Teaching our tamariki about the treaty of Waitangi
Every year we look at the history of New Zealand and put a special focus on teaching our tamariki about The Treaty of Waitangi.
Our tamariki love learning about the country they live in. In our pictures we have captured some of the activities that we took part in.
We explored why the treaty was created and what it meant for New Zealand. Our tamariki loved to share in the wall display created by our kaiako and had lots of questions about it.
Tamariki in our under 2s were supported by their kaiako to sign their own treaty by painting there hands and printing them upon a treaty created for their room. The texture of the paint on their hands was super fun and tickly.
Our over 2s tamariki explored myths and legends from New Zealand and asked our kaiako could they make a waka just like Maui's. We captured photos of our tamariki and now we display them all sailing on their waka of on learning adventures. Our over 2s tamariki also created their own treaty they gathered together for a hui where they discussed what was needed in their learning environment and rules for themselves and their kaiako.
It was so wonderful to hear our tamariki talking about sharing and being kind to eachother and listening to their friends and teachers. To display our treaty each of our over 2s tamariki created a new feather for our korowai and hung it with pride on our wall to display our treaty.
We loved learning about the Treaty of Waitangi and the history of our wonderful country.
