The Adventurers celebrate Waitangi!
Waitangi was not just a day celebration within our Adventurers room this year, we embraced our cultural heritage all week long! The key concept that we are passing on to our tamariki is partnership and the emphasis of working together.
Our first project involved creating our own Korowai. Each tamariki painted an individual feather to embrace their own uniqueness which then came together as a collective, showing how we can still celebrate our differences whilst coming together as one. The korowai symbolises leadership and includes the obligation to care for people and the environment. We have displayed this upon our wall showcasing our shared piece of beauty! Our tamariki are so proud of this and are often heard and seen to be pointing out their feather!
We then went about creating our own class treaty! This was formed together as we discussed expectations within the Adventurers room. This was a great way to hear each child’s views of our room and what they considered a ‘rule’ in their eyes! We actually had a few giggles about these and had to compromise on our final version, a great problem-solving experiment!
We also embraced traditional Māori costume creating our own headbands and experiencing wearing Māori dress. This gave the children a visual representation of part of our cultural heritage. This sparked such pride and joy through these moments!
We love acknowledging our history of New Zealand and believe it is important to celebrate these moments. The Adventurers tamariki have loved the experiences that have given meaning to them and their place within New Zealand. We look forward to continuing our growth and learning surrounding our beautiful country!
