The Importance of Self Regulation Skills in Children
At BestStart we prioritise social development and self-regulation skills in our centres because we understand the fundamental significance for children’s holistic growth and development.
We aim to provide children with the necessary tools to navigate and thrive in social settings. Through activities that promote emotional awareness, conflict resolution and empathy, we empower children to build strong relationships and develop essential life skills.
BestStart is a key participant in the nationwide study Kia Tīmata Pai which is focused on the impact that structured play has in developing language and self-regulation skills in preschoolers. This four-year world-leading study is a collaboration between The Methodist Missions Southern and academics from Auckland, Otago and Victoria Universities along with BestStart Education Leaders and centres. Learnings from this study will ensure our teaching and resources give children the best opportunities to develop these skills.
At BestStart, we focus on helping children develop self-regulation and social skills, setting them up for success. We do this by:
- Building a foundation for lifelong success
By learning to manage emotions and interact well with others, children build a foundation for future achievements, both academically and socially.
- Encouraging positive relationships with others
We create a supportive space where children learn cooperation, empathy and conflict resolution, fostering a sense of belonging and respect.
- Understanding feelings and emotions
We guide children in recognising and managing their emotion, helping them develop emotional resilience and stability.
- School Readiness
Strong social and self-regulation skills make it easier for children to thrive in classroom settings, collaborate with peers and adapt to new learning environments.
- Building Resilience
Through relationships, play and problem-solving, we help children build resilience so they can confidently navigate challenges and embrace new experiences.
