Carpentry is a key area of play within BestStart Marshlands where tamariki can experiment, manage risks and problem solve daily in a supervised environment. We empower our tamariki to use their creativity and make their ideas come to life as they use a wide range of materials to nail, screw or glue together.

Our learning community is amazing at helping us keep this area well stock as they provide different woods, bottle caps, containers and more for the tamariki to repurpose. Many of the tamariki come in so excited if they are able to make a contribution to their preschool. Before the tamariki get to work, we ensure they know the rules and support them to use the tools correctly. Many will beam with mana (pride) when they show the teachers their abilities in this area, and it strengthens the importance of empowerment within the centre.

While the tamariki are using carpentry tools and resources, they are exploring a wide range of mathematics and science skills. Between determining sizes of materials, measuring, counting, balancing, force behind tools and more, they are gaining an understanding of how construction works and developing their working theories. If your child is a creative soul and/or likes to build, come along and see the amazing real-life experiences they can have with us!
