At BestStart Buchanans Rd it is so important to us to provide our centre whānau with support around important areas for both them and their tamariki.

Recently we have provided parent evenings to support our families in the areas of Transitions to School and Resilience.

We are very lucky here at BestStart Buchanans Rd to have great relationships with our locals schools which we drew upon for our transitions evening. We had a panel including principals and new entrant teachers from three local schools come along to talk to our families about starting primary school and to answer questions about all starting school related things. This was a amazing evening with so much valuable knowledge and wisdom gathered in one place and some amazing and meaningful discussions were had.

The key messages to come through in supporting your child to start school were around having a solid grounding in values, self-management and resilience.

Our second parent evening was around one of those very important topics above, Resilience, and how we can support and grow this in our tamariki. Mindy Higgins, a BestStart Learning and Development Facilitator, came along to talk with our teachers and whānau about brain development, the importance of resilience and some of the ways in which we can help to foster this in our tamariki. In order to better support our deaf families within the centre, deaf interpreters also attended the Resilience evening so that all of our centre families could be included.

Both evenings were extremely valuable and had some great “take-aways” for both teachers and whānau around the ways in which we can give our children the best start.
