Under L3, we have mixed age group of children in our bubble. It is offering opportunities to younger children to explore and learn along with their older peers. Kaiako are witnessing beautiful tuakana-teina relationship blossoming in the room. Older children are demonstrating their leadership skills, caring and empathetic attitude towards younger peers while sharing their knowledge with them.

In Māori culture ‘tuakana-teina’ relationships are a fundamental cultural expectation and strength”. In Te Reo Maori the words tuakana and teina are used when referring to an older or younger sibling or relative. In this strategy the terms are given to the more experienced and the less experienced.

In Children are really enjoying observing, involving, and participating in learning experiences together. Some of the highlights of these learning experiences are: constructing with the magnetic tiles, building castles and train stations, reading book to younger ones, older children are singing songs for babies during mat time. Under2’s children are being exposed to new learning strategies, ideas, and broad vocabulary of over2’s. In return older children are being rewarded with lots of respect and aroha from their younger peers.
