Turning fears into interests
A little while ago one of our Preschool friends was visibly upset during one of our fire drills. While comforting him we found out that he was worried about the fire truck coming and wasn't sure what would happen if they did. Together with the child we read our fire safety books and did some research on what fire fighters do and how to keep ourselves safe in a fire. Over the next few weeks we painted pictures, role played being fire fighters, and even took part in the firewise programme. This turned what was once a fear for that child into a strong interest. At the end of the programme we had a visit from the local fire brigade. We were able to show them our fire safety knowledge and the experience with the fire truck and meeting the friendly fire fighters will help our tamariki become great firewise kids.
