At BestStart Napier Central, uku (clay) is a popular medium which is provided to help tamariki care, connect and show aroha for Papatūānuku (Mother Earth)

Being a natural resource, it sits beautifully in harmony with our centre philosophy.

Uku/clay allows for tamariki to be grounded and present as they are encouraged the freedom to explore. Our tamariki are able to develop and strengthen their creative and expressive abilities which weaves into our communication strand.

Uku also contributes to our exploration strand by building self-confidence. Pounding, rolling, and shaping clay strengthens muscles in the hands and fingers, improving hand-eye coordination and dexterity. It promotes motor skill development, encourages creativity and imagination, and enhances cognitive abilities through problem-solving and spatial awareness.

Clay also provides a unique sensory experience, allowing tamariki to explore textures and tactile feedback, and it can serve as a therapeutic outlet for emotional expression and regulation. Uku can also provide tamariki with a sense of security and a feeling of safety when settling into our centre.

This supports our wellbeing strand, where emotional wellbeing is nurtured, as well as the belonging strand where children begin to feel comfortable with our routines, customs and regular events of our day.
