Last week at Beststart Coronation, we enjoyed a fantastic week of learning with the children. We marked Waitangi Day and the Chinese New Year, engaging in various enjoyable activities such as koru painting, crafting paper fans and lanterns, using chopsticks, and having a special mat time with teacher Nilima.

These activities not only foster the development of fine and gross motor skills but also support children to develop;

  • Cultural Awareness: Exposure to diverse traditions, customs, and celebrations fosters an early understanding and appreciation of various cultures.
  • Inclusivity: Celebrating different cultures promotes an inclusive environment, teaching children to appreciate and respect differences among their peers.
  • Language Development: Exposure to diverse cultures often involves exposure to different languages, enhancing children's language skills and communication abilities.
  • Social Skills: Participating in multicultural activities encourages teamwork, cooperation, and social interaction, helping children develop strong social skills.
  • Global Perspective: Early exposure to various cultures contributes to a global perspective, fostering openness and curiosity about the world beyond their immediate surroundings.
  • Respect for Diversity: Celebrating multiple cultures instills a sense of respect for diversity, teaching children that differences are valuable and contribute to the richness of their community.

This aligns with Te Whariki's Contribution Goal 3, ensuring children experience an environment that encourages learning alongside others, as reflected in the learning outcomes of using diverse strategies and skills to play and learn collaboratively.
