We sprung into spring with Sunflowers!
Getting outdoors (even for a small amount of time) can enrich the daily lives of our tamariki. Nature creates a calming environment for them, which enhances their learning experiences, sparks joy and arouses curiosity.
Kaiako Julie, an avid gardener, loves to share her knowledge of gardening with our tamariki and together with their help, we have created a beautiful garden of flowers, fruit & vegetables within our outdoor area in both Teina & Tuakana rooms. Our tamariki thrive off every aspect from pulling out weeds, sowing seeds, watering, composting, caring for our worm farm, sharing produce with our whānau on our community sharing stand and recently, participating in the Raine & Horne Sunflowers & Spring competition.
Raine & Horne provide local kura with sunflower seeds and encourage those involved to grow sunflowers and get creative with them. Along with our tamariki, we asked their thoughts and ideas and eagerly got to work. Our sunflowers are yet to blossom; however, our photos showcase our progress over the last four weeks. Our tamariki have learned how to care for our flowers; patience, as they eagerly watch them grow and gratification as the sunflowers begin to blossom and they see their hard work come through.
The benefits of gardening with our tamariki are innumerable and we want to continue to nurture their fascination with the natural world.
