We’re going on a trip in our rocket ship, zooming through the playground… little “Wild Wainoni Explorers.”

In the preschool our topic of focus at the moment is “Exploration.”

As exploration involves all aspects of the environment, our tamariki are showing an interest in so many areas and one of the most popular things at the moment has been rockets.

It started with one of our awesome Kaiako reading a rocket story, which then lead to our very own rocket being made in our playground.

The tamariki helped make the rocket by turning the big barrel onto its end and then our Kaiako Paulette made the silver top frame for the rocket then brought it into preschool.

The children watched with such enthusiasm as the rocket was taking shape.  They helped decorate the rocket with streamers and cellophane, lights and buttons.

As this is such a strong interest, we also engaged in activities where we got to make our very own rockets to take home that blast off when we blow through the straw. To test our perseverance and determination, we had a rocket game where we had to roll the marbles into the holes on the rocket and balance them.

Through their own curiosity, the tamariki engaged in exploration and are beginning to develop their own working theories about how things work. Then they tried them out by using a variety of resources and this is where we also got to blast off a rocket; made from an empty bottle with a little bit of water in it, then they pushed the pump up and down and waited for it to 'blast off'!
