At BestStart Delta Avenue, we celebrate diversity in all its vibrant forms — and this year’s Plunket BestStart Butterfly Appeal gave us the perfect opportunity to reflect on the beauty of different cultures coming together, just like the butterfly itself.
This year, we supported the Plunket BestStart Butterfly Appeal and raised money for Plunket. But have you ever wondered about the butterfly itself? It’s quite an interesting creature and represents different cultures and communities coming together so beautifully.
Butterflies exist in every culture and country, each with unique species, colours, and meanings. Similarly, our whānau and tamariki come from diverse backgrounds, bringing their own traditions, languages, and perspectives — making our centre even more vibrant.
We raised funds through various activities such as creating butterfly mobiles, butterfly drawings, and hosting a silent auction. We embrace this diversity and love to celebrate these moments with our tamariki.
Butterflies come in endless colours, and during Holi, we added a splash of colour to our celebrations. The children had the opportunity to celebrate this festival of spring — which originated in India and is now widely celebrated around the world — by adorning their colleagues and teachers in colour.
We also celebrated Valentine’s Day, focusing on kindness, respect, and aroha with our tamariki. Much like butterflies that migrate, crossing borders and creating connections, cultures mix and influence each other in beautiful ways.
Many people who have come to Aotearoa New Zealand have shared in this wonderful blend. We recently hosted our families for an Eid lunch, which was enjoyed by all. It was joyous to hear parents connect and laugh together while spending time with their little tamariki.
Like butterflies, our whānau shared their traditions and stories, weaving a rich tapestry of cultural diversity. Butterflies come in endless colours and patterns — much like the variety of cultural traditions, clothing, music, and art around the world.
Celebrating different cultures is like admiring a garden full of diverse butterflies — each unique and beautiful in its own way. We love sharing these moments with our tamariki and look forward to many more!
