Our Nursery is a calm and nurturing space where our smallest pēpi (babies) begin to explore the world around them in a safe and supportive environment. Grounded in the RIE philosophy (Resources for Infant Educarers), we view each child as a capable, competent, and active participant in their own learning journey.

 

Here, development unfolds naturally — at each child's own pace and in their own time. Our kaiako (teachers) build strong, respectful relationships with every pēpi, carefully observing and responding to their unique cues. By following each child's lead, we’re able to provide meaningful interactions, appropriate challenges, and individualised support that nurtures both confidence and independence.

 

With a strong focus on respect, connection, and trust, our Nursery is a place where children feel seen, heard, and valued — laying a solid foundation for lifelong learning.

At BestStart Merivale, our Preschool programme is where the fun of learning really comes to life! Designed for children aged 2 years and over, this vibrant and nurturing environment supports tamariki as they begin preparing for school—while still enjoying the wonder of early childhood.

 

Our Set for School programme is at the heart of our daily routine. With a playful but purposeful structure, children begin building the foundations for literacy and numeracy in meaningful, hands-on ways. Whether recognising their name, measuring ingredients in baking, or exploring letter sounds through music and games, your child is developing essential skills through joy and discovery.

 

We proudly offer 16 rich areas of play across our spacious indoor and outdoor environments—carefully designed to spark imagination, encourage independence, and celebrate each child's individual learning style. From dramatic play, construction, science, and creative arts to messy play, music, and sensory exploration, every day is filled with opportunities to explore, experiment, and grow.

 

As confident explorers, tamariki (children) also regularly venture into our local community. Whether it's visiting the library, exploring local parks, or our local café to help strengthen children’s sense of belonging and connection to the world around them. Through these outings, they build confidence, develop social skills, and deepen their understanding of their wider community.
