Little Ferns is a dedicated space for our youngest children, where we provide a safe, nurturing environment for exploration and discovery at their own pace. We recognise the importance of nurturing trusting relationships between children and teachers through positive and caring interactions in our everyday routines. We recognise whānau as integral partners in our community and experts on their child. We actively invite their input and involvement in learning experiences to nurture a powerful sense of whanaungatanga (connection).

Little Ferns(Under Twos)
Koru Room2 - 3.5 years old
The Koru room offers a space where children are encouraged to develop confidence and self-help skills in a supportive and calm environment. Drawing inspiration from Montessori, we incorporate engaging materials and daily routines that encourage children to master essential everyday skills, such as dressing themselves and caring for their environment. These meaningful activities are designed to promote children's concentration and foster a growing sense of competence.
We build on the philosophy of Whanaungatanga (connection) by supporting the children to form strong, trusting relationships with their teachers and peers. As they learn to communicate their needs and explore their world, we nurture their sense of manaakitanga (kindness and respect) towards themselves and others
Kiwi Room3.5 - 5 years old
The Kiwi Room experience is designed to prepare your child to be set for school. We focus on building the skills, knowledge, and dispositions necessary for lifelong learning, ensuring a smooth transition to primary school. This aligns with our Learning Priority: that children will be able to recognise and appreciate their own ability to learn / te rangitiratanga.
In this room, children engage with our integrated Montessori curriculum, receiving a variety of early literacy and numeracy experiences. Teachers facilitate a deep exploration of concepts in math, language, science, and culture. We specifically foster the concentration, independence, and routine skills essential for classroom success.
A strong focus is placed on tuakana/teina relationships—where older children guide and empower their younger peers. This powerful dynamic helps the Kiwi Room children develop a strong sense of manaakitanga (respect) within the community and fosters a sense of responsibility and leadership.
Our regular community excursions Hapori Explorers are key to making meaningful connections and demonstrating Whanaungatanga (growing community through relationships). Children get out and about, connecting with the wider community in Mosgiel.
