Discover our unique rooms

BestStart Nottingham Avenue has been part of the Halswell community for decades, and our homely environment reflects that long-standing connection. Set across two converted houses, our three age-appropriate classrooms each have their own adjoining garden and playground, creating a unique early learning environment that feels familiar, welcoming and connected to the local community.

Each classroom is thoughtfully arranged to support the different ages and stages of development, from infants through to preschoolers. Our newly renovated outdoor playground adds even more space for active play, discovery and adventure, while our gardens and trees give tamariki opportunities to connect with nature throughout their day.

With a long history in Halswell and spaces designed to feel like a home away from home, BestStart Nottingham Avenue offers children a place where they can build relationships, grow in confidence and feel a genuine sense of belonging as they progress through their early learning journey.

Explore our classroom spaces below to see how each environment is designed to support your child's age, stage and learning journey!

Our NurseryUnder 2's

Our Nursery is a small, intimate space caring for just seven pēpi, creating a calm environment where your baby can receive plenty of individual attention from their kaiako. With low ratios and a small group, our teachers have the time to get to know your child closely, understand their cues and respond to their individual routines and needs.

  • Start with Heart: Our youngest tamariki are supported through nurturing, responsive relationships that build trust, security and confidence from their very first days at the centre.
  • Strong relationships: A small group means your baby can form close bonds with their kaiako, helping them feel settled, secure and comfortable in their new environment.
  • Individualised care: Our teachers can follow your baby's unique rhythms, interests and developmental pace, creating consistency between home and the centre.
  • Peace of mind for whānau: With a small group and close relationships, you can feel confident knowing your baby is receiving attentive, personalised care from teachers who genuinely know them.

Our Nursery provides a gentle home away from home, giving your pēpi the space, time and nurturing relationships they need to grow and explore at their own pace

Our Toddler Room 2- 3 years old

Our Toddler Room is a supportive stepping stone towards greater independence, where tamariki are encouraged to take an active role in their own learning. Through strong relationships with kaiako and friends, children can build confidence, explore their growing interests and begin making more choices for themselves.

Our child-led programme provides a variety of hands-on experiences that encourage children to:

  • Build independence: Tamariki are supported to make choices, have a go for themselves and develop confidence in their growing abilities.
  • Follow their interests: Kaiako use children's interests and ideas to shape meaningful learning experiences, helping them stay curious and engaged.
  • Learn through play: Our environment gives children opportunities to experiment, investigate and have fun while developing new knowledge and skills.
  • Challenge themselves: Children are encouraged to try new things, take considered risks and extend what they already know and can do.
  • Build friendships: Positive interactions with peers help tamariki develop important communication, cooperation and social skills.

For whānau, this means a space where your child can grow in confidence and independence while being supported by caring kaiako who know and value them as an individual.

Our Preschool RoomOver 3's

Our Preschool Room supports tamariki as they grow into confident, capable and increasingly independent learners. Through the strong relationships they have built with their teachers and peers, children are encouraged to take responsibility, contribute to their learning community and become active participants in their own learning.

  • Set for School: Our Set for School programme is woven throughout the daily programme and routines, supporting children to develop the independence, confidence, social skills and early learning foundations they need for a positive transition to school. Resources are readily available so children can practise these skills through everyday experiences.
  • Learning through independence: Tamariki are encouraged to lead their own learning, make choices and use their initiative as they explore their interests.
  • Practical, hands-on learning: Children are resourceful and capable learners who enjoy investigating their environment, solving problems and putting their developing skills into practice.
  • Confidence to take on challenges: With close teacher support, tamariki are encouraged to try new things, take considered risks and extend their knowledge and abilities.
  • Positive relationships: Strong connections with teachers and peers help children develop responsibility, respect, communication and the confidence to contribute to their learning community.

Our Preschool Room helps tamariki develop the confidence, independence and skills they need to feel capable and excited as they take their next step towards school.
