At BestStart Kamo Central, we’re incredibly lucky to have the Te Kamo Fire Station located just across the road — and today, we took full advantage of that!
Our tamariki were thrilled to visit the fire station, where the amazing firefighters had set up a range of engaging activities to help teach us all about fire safety.
The adventure began with an exciting obstacle course. The children got to step into the role of a firefighter — dragging a “person” (a jacket) to safety, weaving through cones, and racing to the fire hose to "put out" the fire.
Next, we had the chance to climb aboard a real fire truck! The firefighters showed us the different parts of the truck, turned on the sirens and lights, and explained how the equipment works.
We also learned what to do in the event of a fire. Using a large sheet to simulate smoke, the firefighters taught the tamariki to "get down, stay low, and get out" — a crucial safety skill they all got to practise.
To top it all off, the children tried on real firefighter gear, including helmets and jackets, and each received a fun activity pack to take home.
This hands-on experience was not only exciting but also taught our tamariki vital safety lessons in a fun and memorable way. A massive thank you to the incredible team at Te Kamo Fire Station for taking the time to educate and inspire our little learners — we are so grateful!
