At BestStart Māngere East, we have been intentionally weaving science into everyday learning and have seen the powerful impact it has on our tamariki. Science provides endless opportunities for curiosity, discovery, and experimentation, enriching children’s understanding of the world around them.

In Te Whare Hana (Preschool), our tamariki have been engaging in exciting experiments each day. Some favourites have included:

  • Moon Sand – combining flour and oil

  • Snow – mixing baking soda and soap

  • Gooey Gloop – experimenting with cornflour and water

Through these experiments, tamariki are learning about:

  • Textures and Properties – feeling and describing how materials change when mixed.

  • Cause and Effect – observing what happens when two ingredients are combined.

  • Sensory Exploration – engaging their senses of touch and sight.

Equally important is the joy and excitement that comes after experimenting. Tamariki love diving in with their hands, getting messy, and having so much fun.

By embedding science into our daily programme at BestStart Māngere East, we are encouraging children to think like little scientists—curious, observant, creative, and eager to explore.
