At BestStart Dixon Heights, tamariki were involved in various activities to observe Anzac Day.

This day was a perfect blend of creativity, learning, and fun, helping our young learners connect with an important part of history.

Children were invited to bake traditional Anzac biscuits. This hands-on experience not only allowed the little ones to develop their fine motor skills by stirring, mixing, and measuring, but it also provided a great opportunity to practice teamwork as they worked together to bake biscuits. This activity also gave them a chance to talk about the history of the Anzac biscuits.

As the children eagerly enjoyed their homemade treats, they learned that the biscuits were made by families to send to soldiers during World War I because they could withstand long trips without spoiling. Arts and crafts were another highlight of the day.

The children participated in colouring poppy flowers, a symbol of remembrance for Anzac Day. Using a variety of materials, from scissors to markers and glue, the children created beautiful crafts of Anzac symbols to display around the preschool.

These activities sparked conversations about the significance of the Anzac Day symbols and their connection to soldiers who fought for our freedom. Throughout the day, children also took part in storytelling and discussions, learning about the courage and selflessness of the brave Anzac soldiers.

By incorporating hands-on activities and meaningful conversations, kaiako at Best Start Dixon Heights helped the children foster a sense of respect and gratitude for the heroes of Anzac Day, while making the day both memorable and educational for all.
