In our under-twos room, even the simplest experiences offer rich opportunities for learning.

Recently, our youngest children explored puff paint — a soft, squishy material perfect for curious little hands (and sometimes feet!)

Some children approached with gentle curiosity, pressing the paint and watching it move beneath their fingers. Others dove right in, spreading colours with joyful abandon.

For these little learners, art isn’t about the final product — it’s about discovery, sensation, and connection. Sensory play like this supports early brain development by engaging multiple senses — touch, sight, and movement.

It helps develop fine motor skills as children grasp, squeeze, and swipe. Most importantly, it builds confidence and curiosity within a safe, supportive environment. Our educators are always observing and responding to each child’s unique cues.

Through thoughtful interactions — describing textures, naming colours, or simply joining in the wonder — they extend the learning in meaningful ways. What may look like messy play is, in fact, the foundation of creativity, problem-solving, and early communication.

Long before words are spoken, children are expressing themselves and learning about their world. We believe all children are capable, curious learners and we at BestStart Cambridge love exploring this curiousity together.
