Carpentry Creations at BestStart Totara Street
Whether the tamariki at our centre are hammering a nail in, using a screwdriver or even adding finishing touches onto their pieces of work, fine motor skills are in use. The benefits to providing our tamariki with a safe and well resourced carpentry area far out weigh the possible challenges.
With close supervision and encouragement from our kaiako, safe behaviour is always executed and rules are discussed. Fine motor skills are the tiny precise movements demonstrated using hand-eye coordination and strengthening the neural connections of the central nervous system.
This is the area of the brain that 'calibrates' or fine-tunes movement, specifically, the precise hand movements involved in carpentry tasks. Carpentry practices can also aid in basic math and science calculations. Tamariki can gain concepts of length, depth, width and height. By experimenting with force, it allows us to gain insight into materials of different textures and densities.
By allowing tamariki the freedom to enjoy the carpentry area, it give us no greater joy than watching as their plans take shape and the sheer excitement witnessed when the tamariki have taken everyday items, have joined them together and realising a sense of accomplishment of seeing their creative 3D visions come to life.
