This week, our centre enthusiastically took part in New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Week, embracing a valuable opportunity to explore alternative communication methods.

As part of our group learning, the children focused on signing the numbers 0–4 and the letters A–D.

They watched closely as the signs were modelled and eagerly joined in, using their fingers to mimic each movement. Their proud smiles and excitement shone through when they successfully signed the numbers and letters, and many were keen to share their new skills with friends and teachers.

Following the signing practice, the children engaged in a creative colouring activity featuring images of the hand signs for each number and letter. This activity encouraged focus, persistence, and reinforced their learning through visual and tactile experiences.

This learning closely supports early numeracy and literacy goals. Learning to sign numbers helps build number recognition and counting skills, while engaging with letters lays an important foundation for literacy development.

Additionally, practising NZSL broadens communication abilities, aligning with the Communication strand that fosters verbal and non-verbal expression for a range of purposes. Participating in NZSL Week also enhances children’s sense of identity and belonging, fostering respect and appreciation for Aotearoa New Zealand’s official languages and diverse cultures.
