Here at BestStart Porchester, we had a week-long celebration of Diwali, the festival of lights. The majority of our children attending the centre celebrate this festival. It is fitting to celebrate by providing a variety of learning experiences that children enjoy. Our children had a go at making clay diya, decorating paper diya, and coloring paper rangioli.

Some had a go at all of the arts and crafts. When they got the hang of the songs; Ay Diwali Re and Chanda Mama, they just kept singing them and even requested for it during mat time. Of course, henna painting wouldn't be missed. From babies to preschool they waited patiently to have their turn. The highlight was the dress-up day where children and staff came dressed in their colorful cultural attire. Some parents even dressed up too.

We likewise had a taste of Indian food during the final day of celebration. It was such a great celebration that empowered our children and whanau's cultural identity and language. Our and our children's learning of making connections between places, people, and things was also strengthening as we all appreciated yet another culture other than our own.

Most of all, we all had fun and enjoyed celebrating a colorful and vibrant culture.
