As part of our BestStart Raureka philosophy and centre priorities, we celebrate the unique cultures our tamariki and whānau bring to the centre. Recently, we held a fundraising event where our tamariki were invited to bring their cultural clothing and significant artefacts to the centre. These were photographed to create calendars, cards, and diaries for 2025.

It was beautiful to see the variety of cultural costumes and vibrant colours our tamariki shared. They took pride in wearing and showcasing the important clothing they had brought from home to their teachers and friends. Our whānau also appreciated the opportunity to participate, delighting in viewing the photographs.

Although this was a fundraising event, the photographs have also been incorporated into our classrooms, representing the unique cultures of our tamariki. This aligns with our curriculum document, Te Whāriki, where tamariki develop a sense of belonging within BestStart Raureka.

Through this celebration, tamariki recognise and celebrate the special cultures, languages, and identities they bring to our learning community. It also fosters connections between whānau and tamariki, enabling them to identify and appreciate significant cultural aspects from other cultures as well as their own.
