Christmas in our Kiwi Rūma
Christmas in our kiwi rūma, This month has been an exciting, fun-filled journey as we prepare for Christmas in the nursery. It has been heartwarming to see our tamariki share and explore the diverse ways their whānau (families) celebrate this special season.
By connecting the traditions of home with our nursery activities, we aim to foster a strong sense of belonging and connection for all our tamariki. Over the past few weeks, we’ve embraced the magic of Christmas through a range of engaging activities. One of the highlights has been making gingerbread. For some whānau, this is linked to their tradition of celebrating Sinterklaas with spiced cookies, while others love creating gingerbread houses together. These baking activities allow the tamariki to share their family traditions and bond with one another, all while exploring new skills.
Our sensory play has also been infused with Christmas cheer. From minty fresh, to warm spiced Christmas playdough, the tamariki have been exploring the smells and textures of the season. This sensory-rich activity connects them to the festive spirit while supporting their development in a hands-on way. Crafting has been another cherished aspect of our celebrations. Together, we’ve created handprint wreaths, wooden ornaments, and other decorations to brighten our classroom. These crafts not only bring the festive spirit to life but also give tamariki the chance to express themselves creatively and contribute to our shared space.
Christmas is a time for connection, and through these activities, we’ve nurtured a sense of whānaungatanga (kinship) that bridges the gap between home and the nursery. Together, we’re creating a foundation of belonging and joy that will last well beyond the festive season.
