Messy, Magical Clay Play
Today we dived in to the wonderful world of clay, and what a hit it was with the tamariki!
Right from the start, little hands were eager to dig in—rolling, squishing, and patting the clay into all sorts of shapes. Some children commented on how firm it felt, while others were fascinated when it became sticky with a splash of water.
The real excitement began when we introduced the spray bottles. Instantly, the children’s eyes lit up as they discovered how the mist of water transformed the clay. “Look! It’s softer now!” one child exclaimed, while another could not stop spraying and giggling as the clay got wetter and easier to mould. What made this moment so special was the freedom to experiment.
The tamariki were curious scientists, testing out what would happen next, and at the same time, artists shaping their own creations. It was messy, yes—but in the very best way. Clay play is such a simple activity, yet it brings so much joy and learning. Watching the children explore, imagine, and create reminded us why hands-on play is so powerful.
We can not wait to get the clay back out again soon!
