The children in Ngā Puawai have been very busy exploring their interests, skills, and knowledge in early literacy. This includes writing, drawing, reading books and legends with Kaiako, and exploring oral language and NZ sign language. This local planning has come from many of our whānau having aspirations for their tamaiti focusing on writing, pen development, and control, expression of oral language, and being prepared for the next stage of their education (Kura).

This also aligns with one of our centre’s priorities for ākonga of "Oral Language", Te Whāriki learning outcome “Understanding oral language and using it for a range of purposes | he kōrero ā-waha “. Nga tamariki has enjoyed developing their skills and interests in early literacy and contributing to a lot of individual goals that promote being set for school. Tamariki has been practicing recognizing and writing the first letter of their name, some even their whole name.

They have built confidence in recognizing shapes, letters, and numbers and have also developed new friendships with other children who share similar interests and skill sets. Kaiako has set up more intentional spaces for literacy learning and included more resources so that children can freely explore a wider variety of literacy concepts in small groups or individual experiences and larger groups.
